COMING SOON…

Two, brand NEW Epic Ryde locations are opening!

*A highlands location by Sloan’s Lake
(Opening December 2018)

You may or may not know, but the original Epic Ryde was born and located in Edgewater, on the west side of town, right across from Sloan’s Lake.
Epic will be returning to its old stomping grounds with a 2nd studio at 29th and Tennyson. We are so excited for our planned opening date of December 1, 2018.
*A Westminster location in the new downtown Westminster Ascent building.
(Opening Summer 2019)
We are super excited to spread the Epic love a little further north by opening our 3rd location in Westminster next summer. A whole new downtown Westminster is being built, surrounded by local restaurants, hotels, businesses and parks, we know this location is going to be a great fit for Epic.
Stay tuned…. More details to come on both locations!!!

Epic Ryde is….. Functional Fitness

Epic Ryde is not dancing on a bike.  You will not be riding and trying to do complex weight lifting moves while you are pedaling. You will not be using a bar or a bat or a hockey stick to try and multi task while you are riding.  You will not tap it back or push it forward or throw your hands in the air like you are at a concert. There is no leader board in the front of class to stare at, only the instructor.

That’s right we are not Soul Cycle or Flywheel or Cyclebar or any of those other studios. We are EPIC RYDE and we keep it real. We are functional, fun and ride a bike how its meant to be ridden. We encourage functional safe indoor cycling. If you would not do it outside then you will not do it inside our studio on our bikes. The moment you see a cyclist riding down the street with 3 lbs weights over their head doing shoulder presses then we can talk, but for now that seems a bit like something a person would do after having a couple margaritas at the bar. Plus the balance needed would be incredible.

Indoor cycling is riding a bike indoors. The concept of cycling indoors and using free weights, bars and other apparatuses on a bike while trying to effectively get a cardiovascular workout in is almost comical and super unsafe. I personally believe the concept started with people thinking they were saving more time by trying to do a cardio and resistance workout all in one. While is theory this was an interesting thought but after the initial thought became for some studios the reality, it’s actually very silly. Now I never said that it could not be fun. I mean multi tasking is always more interesting but usually not as effect and in the case of indoor cycling while trying to lift weights is not effective at all.

It’s pretty obvious is you are dancing or lifting weights or doing pushups on a bike, your form and potential of hurting yourself greatly increases and your efficiency decrease.

“But I am getting an upper body workout in too, said the clueless rider.”

This is the argument that some people will have and yes you are moving your upper body but what is the goal? You can’t gain strength with 3 lbs weights when you are trying to pedal on a bike and actually do the correct form of an exercise.

“But I use 5lbs weight, said another clueless rider.”

Well congratulations! This just means you are a risk taker and instead of accidentally hurting yourself with less weight you have increased your opportunity of injury.

Epic Ryde is all about keeping it real and I can not get over all the cycling studios that keep thinking all this integrated crap on the bike is of value and more effective then participating in a real indoor cycling class. Epic Ryde is the REAL deal. We focus on speed, endurance, climbs, intervals, form and overall cardio fitness. Our cycling classes are full of good music, motivating instructors and a kick butt workout. We will never ask you to try and dance with your arms on the bike or throw your hands up off the handlebars. That’s right, we like you to keep your hands on the bike at all times. Weird right 🙂

With an industry so focused on the latest and greatest with technology and trying to come up with the next best thing, the industry is missing the point! The next best thing is really what has worked since indoor cycling ever became a “thing.”

Great music, motivating educated instructors and a workout that only involves a bike and riding it how it was meant to be ridden.

Have you done your POWER TEST yet?

Power_Opening_Title

You have been riding the Matrix IC7 bikes for a while now. Have you heard your instructors say

“Have you done your Power Test Yet?

Do you stare at them thinking, Power What?

Let me explain what it is and why it is important.

The Epic Ryde Power Test

Many of you use the estimated FTW number the bike spits out to you. This number is an average, a calculation based on your height, weight and number of hours you work out per week. This estimate is fine but it’s not always accurate.

You may have found that it is very easy for you to reach your red zone or it might be super hard. This is due to the estimated number being off; you might be stronger that the computer has estimated. This is why doing a power test is so important.

You may already be familiar with RPM and resistance, but what is watts and FTW? Watts is the power you produce, using a combination of the speed at which you pedal and the force you use to move the resistance you have on your bike.

Monitoring your watts, just like monitoring your heart rate, will help you to train smarter. Over time you can then retake the power test to see how your endurance and strength have improved.

The FTW, Functional Threshold Watt Rate, is the value focused on. (What is the highest level of work you can achieve and maintain, while staying functional, performing the task at hand well?) This is a percentage of your threshold wattage, which can be determined accurately by performing the power test.

Once you take the power test, you are given a number, your FTW max, which you will then enter into your bike console instead of using the estimated one!

Your monitor will then change colors based on your work zone, or the specific percentage of your FTW.

Even if you have not taken your power test, your calories burned based on your power is still accurate, thus being that power determines effort. However, doing the power test allows you to accurately see your zones based on your true fitness level.

Regardless of your ability or fitness level, whether you are a seasoned outdoor rider, or a casual cycling participant, allfitness levels can ride side by side, share the same work color, and work based on their individual FTW. This is why doing a power test is so great.

How do I set up my power test?

*We are going to be holding a group power test on Saturday, April 15th at 11:15 a.m.

*It’s FREE but you will need to sign up online. It will take 20-30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.

You will achieve the most accurate results if you have not worked out prior to this test.

Make sure to bring water and a towel.
